Can I Rent a Car for My Driving Test?

Yes. You are required to provide a car for your RSA driving test, and hiring one from your driving school is the normal route if you do not have a suitable vehicle available. Many learners have no car in the household, or have one that is not insured for them to drive, or one that would not pass the preliminary check on the day.

There is a second reason most learners choose car rental for the driving test even when they technically have access to a car: taking the test in the vehicle you learned in removes a whole layer of unfamiliarity. The biting point, the mirror positions, the width of the car and the feel of the brakes are already known. Turning up in a car you have never driven adds risk for no benefit.

Can You Rent a Car on a Learner Permit?

Ordinary consumer car rental firms will not hire to a learner permit holder, which is why standard car rental for a road test is not an option. Driving school test car hire is different: the car is insured specifically for tuition and test use, it is dual-controlled, and your instructor is present before and after the test. That is the arrangement GoDrive provides.

What the Car Must Satisfy on Test Day

Whether you hire a car for the driving test or use your own, the vehicle must be taxed, insured, roadworthy and displaying valid discs, with working lights, indicators and mirrors and tyres in legal condition. It must be suitable for the test category and let the tester sit safely with a clear view.

If the car fails this preliminary check the test does not go ahead and the fee is lost. It is one of the most frustrating ways to lose a test slot and it is entirely avoidable.

What Test Day Car Hire Includes

GoDrive test day hire covers the fully insured dual-control car plus a warm-up lesson immediately beforehand — normally an hour of driving in the area so you settle your nerves and get the car under your hands before the tester sits in. That warm-up is the part worth protecting: your first manoeuvre of the day should not be the one being marked.

Book the car as soon as you have your test date. Test day slots are limited and tend to be taken early, particularly in busy periods, and leaving it late can mean no car available on the morning you need one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car for my driving test in Galway?

Yes. GoDrive provides a fully insured dual-control car for test day in Galway, normally with a warm-up lesson beforehand. Call 089 432 4325 as soon as you have your date.

Where can I rent a car for a driving test if I have no car of my own?

Through a driving school rather than a commercial rental firm. Consumer hire companies do not rent to learner permit holders; a school car is insured for test use and dual-controlled.

How much does driving test car hire cost?

Test day hire is priced separately from lessons because the arrangement varies — whether a warm-up lesson is included, and how long the instructor is needed. Message us on WhatsApp for a current quote.

Can I use my own car for the driving test instead?

Yes, provided it is taxed, insured for you, roadworthy and displaying valid discs, with working lights, indicators, mirrors and legal tyres.

How far in advance should I book a car for my driving test?

As soon as your test date is confirmed. Test day slots are limited and the popular dates go first.
