Looking for the cheapest driving lessons in Galway? The honest answer is that the lowest hourly rate is rarely the cheapest way to get your licence. What actually decides your total cost is how many lessons you need, and that comes down to the quality of the instruction you get from lesson one.

This guide sets out exactly what driving lessons cost in Galway, what you are legally required to pay for, where learners waste money, and how to keep your total spend down without cutting corners. All prices shown are our own current rates at GoDrive School of Motoring.

How much do driving lessons cost in Galway?

Driving lessons in Galway are generally priced per hour, with discounts for booking a block of lessons up front. Our rates are:

Option Price Per hour
Single lesson (1 hour) €55 €55.00
6 lesson package (6 hours) €325 €54.17
12 lesson package (12 hours, full EDT) €650 €54.17
Pre-test lesson (2 hours) €100 €50.00

Car hire for your driving test is priced separately, because it depends on the test centre and the time slot. Message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm it straight away.

Why the cheapest hourly rate is usually not the cheapest licence

Imagine two learners. One pays €45 an hour and needs 22 lessons because the sessions are unstructured and they repeat the same roundabout for weeks. The other pays €55 an hour, follows a proper lesson plan, and is test-ready after 14. The first learner spends €990. The second spends €770 and sits their test months earlier.

That is the maths that matters. When you compare driving schools in Galway, ask about the things that decide how fast you progress:

  • Is the instructor RSA approved, with an ADI number you can check?
  • Do they follow a written lesson plan, or just drive around?
  • Do they teach on the actual test routes used by your test centre?
  • Is the full hour spent driving, or does pickup and drop-off eat into it?
  • Will the same instructor take you all the way through?

At GoDrive every lesson is delivered by MD Ojiullah Mahmud, an RSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI 42315). You get the same instructor from your first lesson to your test, so nobody has to re-learn where you are at.

EDT: the 12 lessons you are required to take

If you are a first-time learner in Ireland, Essential Driver Training is not optional. Every learner who got their first learner permit after 4 April 2011 must complete 12 EDT lessons with an approved instructor before sitting the driving test. Each lesson covers a set module, and your instructor signs off your logbook as you go.

So the real question is not whether to pay for 12 lessons. It is whether you pay for them one at a time at €55, or as a package at €650 and save €10 while you are at it.

Most learners also need some practice beyond the 12 EDT modules. How many depends entirely on how much private practice you are getting between lessons, which brings us to the biggest saving available to you.

The cheapest hour of driving is the one you do not pay for

Practice between lessons, with a qualified driver in the car, costs you nothing and it is the single biggest factor in how few paid lessons you end up needing. Learners who practise regularly between EDT modules consistently need fewer extra hours than those who only drive during lessons.

A few things make that practice count:

  • Practise the specific skill from your last lesson, not just general driving
  • Keep sessions short and frequent rather than long and occasional
  • Drive in the area around your test centre once you are confident
  • Ask your instructor what to work on before you leave the car

Costs learners forget to budget for

Lessons are only part of what it takes to get on the road. Build these into your plan so nothing catches you out:

  • Driver theory test — you must pass this before you can apply for a learner permit
  • Learner permit — applied for through the NDLS after your theory test
  • Driving test fee — paid to the RSA when you book your test
  • Car hire for the test — unless you have your own taxed, insured and roadworthy car
  • Insurance and tax — if you plan to practise in your own vehicle

Fees set by the RSA and NDLS change from time to time, so check the current amounts on their official sites before you budget.

Automatic or manual: does it change the price?

Our hourly rate is the same for both. The difference is in how many lessons you are likely to need.

Automatic lessons remove clutch control and gear changes entirely, so you spend your time on road awareness, observation and hazard perception instead of stalling at junctions. Many learners reach test standard in fewer hours, which makes automatic the cheaper route overall for some people.

The trade-off is the licence itself. Pass in an automatic and your licence covers automatic cars only. Pass in a manual and you can drive both. If you expect to drive a manual car at some point, learning manual from the start usually costs less than paying twice.

Where we teach across Galway

We are based at Unit 4, Westside Shopping Centre on Seamus Quirke Road, and we pick up across the city and county:

Salthill, Knocknacarra, Rahoon, Newcastle, Westside, Moycullen, Oranmore, Renmore, Roscam, Doughiska, Tuam and Loughrea.

Pickup from your home, college or workplace is included in the lesson price. There is no extra charge for collection within the areas we cover.

Test centres we prepare you for

Galway learners sit their test at one of two centres, and the routes are quite different:

  • Clybaun Hotel test centre — city driving, busier junctions, more traffic to read
  • Carnmore test centre — higher speed limits and rural roads on the approach

We practise on the roads used by both, so the test route is familiar ground rather than somewhere you are seeing for the first time on the day. Being comfortable with the area is one of the cheapest ways to avoid a repeat test fee.

How to keep your total cost down

  1. Book a package rather than single lessons. You need 12 EDT lessons regardless, so paying per lesson only costs you more.
  2. Practise between lessons. Free, and the biggest single lever on how many hours you need.
  3. Do not book your test too early. A failed test costs the fee, the car hire and the wait for a new date.
  4. Take a pre-test lesson. Two hours on the real routes is cheaper than resitting.
  5. Keep your lessons regular. Long gaps mean re-covering ground you already paid for.
