The ultimate aim of EDT Driving Lessons Galway City is to keep young drivers safe on Irish roads by having Approved Driving Instructors working with them to become competent, confident and skilled drivers.
EDT lessons (essential driver training) are 12 one hour Driving lessons, that are designed to teach a learner driver the core skills required to drive safely on the road.
The RSA (Road Safety Authority) has deemed it mandatory that you will have to complete the 12 EDT Driving lesson programmed, before you can be issued with an RSA driving test date,
Who is Required to complete The EDT Programme?
Any driver who has been issued an Irish learner permit on or after 04/04/2011 is required to complete the 12 hour EDT driving lesson programme. As you complete each module your approved driving instructor (ADI) must record your progress in your RSA EDT logbook.69

Here are the answers to some common questions regarding Essential Driver Training (EDT) in Galway:
EDT is a mandatory training course designed to impart essential driving skills to learner car drivers. Completing 12 EDT driving lessons in Galway is now a legal requirement.
A total of 12 EDT Driving Lessons must be completed. You can find a detailed breakdown of the 12 EDT Driving lesson syllabus on our website.
Any driver issued a learner permit on or after 04/04/2011 is legally obliged to undergo the mandatory 12 EDT Driving lessons.
There is generally no requirement to repeat EDT, except in cases where the learner permit has lapsed for more than 5 years.
Essential Driver Training is twelve mandatory lessons for every first-time car learner permit holder in Ireland. Each one covers a defined topic, is delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor, and is signed off in your EDT logbook. You cannot sit the driving test until all twelve are complete.
The twelve lessons work through the following, roughly in this order:
The syllabus is sequential, so each lesson builds on the one before. That is why taking your EDT lessons in Galway at a steady weekly rhythm produces better drivers than scattering twelve lessons across a year — with long gaps you spend the start of each session recovering ground you had already covered.
GoDrive charges €55 for a single hour, €325 for six hours and €650 for the full twelve-hour EDT programme. Because the twelve lessons are mandatory anyway, the twelve-hour block is what most Galway learners book, and it is the cheapest route through the requirement.
Pre-test lessons, a mock test and car hire for the test are priced separately, because not everyone needs them and how many you need varies a lot from learner to learner.
Finishing twelve lessons means you have met the legal requirement. It does not automatically mean you are ready to pass. Learners who practise between lessons with a qualified accompanying driver — someone who has held a full licence in the same category for at least two years, with L plates displayed — consistently need fewer extra paid hours than those who only drive during lessons.
If you have little or no practice between sessions, budget for a few hours beyond the twelve. That is normal and not a sign anything has gone wrong.
Lessons start from Westside Shopping Centre on Seamus Quirke Road, a central meeting point with easy access and parking, or from Gleann Rua in Oranmore. From Westside you are minutes from quiet residential streets for the early lessons and from busier distributor roads, roundabouts and multi-lane sections as you progress — so a lesson can escalate in difficulty without wasting time relocating.
GoDrive covers Galway city and the surrounding areas including Salthill, Knocknacarra, Rahoon, Newcastle, Westside, Moycullen, Oranmore, Renmore, Roscam, Doughiska, Tuam and Loughrea.
GoDrive charges €650 for the full twelve-hour EDT programme, compared with €55 per hour booked individually.
Completed EDT lessons stay recorded in your logbook. What does expire is your learner permit, so keep an eye on its validity while you work through the twelve.
Yes. EDT is twelve lessons regardless of transmission. Note that passing your test in an automatic restricts your licence to automatic cars.
No. They only count if delivered and logged by an RSA Approved Driving Instructor. Ask for the ADI number before booking — GoDrive lessons are taught by Mahmud, ADI No. 42315.
