If you are searching how many driving lessons you need for an automatic, the short answer is that the legal minimum in Ireland is twelve — the Essential Driver Training programme — and most learners need some hours beyond that. How many more depends almost entirely on one thing: how much you practise between lessons.

The Legal Minimum: 12 EDT Lessons

Every first-time car learner permit holder must complete twelve Essential Driver Training lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor, each logged in your EDT logbook. This applies whether you learn in an automatic or a manual — the transmission does not change the requirement.

You cannot sit the driving test until all twelve are complete, so these are not optional and not negotiable. What they are, though, is a minimum standard rather than a readiness standard. Finishing twelve lessons does not mean you are ready to pass.

How Many Lessons Most Learners Actually Need

There is no single honest number, and anyone quoting one precisely is guessing. What the pattern looks like in practice:

  • Regular practice between lessons — a couple of hours a week in a family car with a qualified accompanying driver. Many of these learners finish close to the twelve, perhaps with two or three extra hours plus a pre-test lesson.
  • No practice between lessons — driving only during the lesson itself. Expect to need noticeably more, because each session starts with recovering ground rather than building on it.
  • Nervous learners, or returning after a long gap — usually more again, and that is normal rather than a problem. Confidence is built by repetition over time.

The single biggest lever on your total cost is not finding a cheaper hourly rate. It is needing fewer hours, and practice is what does that.

Does an Automatic Take Fewer Lessons Than a Manual?

Often, yes. Removing the clutch removes the hardest part of early learning: stalling, hill-start rollback, and managing the biting point while also watching mirrors and reading a junction. That frees attention for the things the test actually assesses — observation, anticipation and road position.

But automatic is not a shortcut to passing. The test is identical and marked the same way, with the same manoeuvres. Automatic learners sometimes find slow-speed control needs its own practice, because managing a car that creeps forward on its own during a reverse is a different skill from slipping a clutch.

The Trade-off Worth Understanding Before You Choose

This is the one decision in your training with a permanent consequence. If you sit and pass your test in an automatic, your Irish licence is restricted to automatic cars. Driving a manual later means sitting a full test again in a manual.

So the question is not which is easier — automatic clearly is. The question is whether you will ever need to drive a manual: a works van, a family car, a cheap second-hand buy, a hire car abroad. If the honest answer is no, the restriction costs you nothing and automatic gets you on the road faster. See automatic driving lessons in Galway for how the lessons run.

How to Tell When You Are Actually Ready

A realistic self-check, regardless of how many hours you have logged. Can you drive for forty minutes in unfamiliar traffic without your instructor prompting or intervening? Can you do each manoeuvre cleanly without being talked through it? If not, more hours will cost less than a failed test and the wait for another date.

A mock test under full test discipline answers this far better than counting lessons does. Your instructor stops teaching and starts assessing, and you find out which faults you repeat when nobody is warning you in advance. Most learners discover two or three habits they had no idea about.

What It Costs in Galway

GoDrive charges €55 for a single hour, €325 for six hours and €650 for the full twelve-hour EDT programme. Because the twelve are mandatory anyway, the twelve-hour block is the cheapest route through the requirement. Pre-test lessons, a mock test and car hire for your driving test are priced separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many driving lessons do you need to pass in an automatic?

Twelve EDT lessons are the legal minimum. Most learners need some hours beyond that, and how many depends mainly on how much supervised practice they get between lessons.

Are the 12 EDT lessons enough on their own?

For some learners with regular practice, yes. For many it is not. EDT is a legal minimum rather than a guarantee of test readiness.

How long is a driving lesson?

GoDrive lessons are a full hour of driving. Starting from a central meeting point rather than home pickup means the whole hour is lesson time.

Can I practise between lessons?

Yes, and you should. As a learner permit holder you must display L plates and be accompanied by someone who has held a full licence in the same category for at least two years.
